Where do I start?
May 10, 2010
Since this is my first blog, an introduction seems like a good place. With three daughters, 2-1/2 year old potty training identical twins and an almost 6 year old going on 16, life feels plenty busy. Add in my other life as a part-time college instructor and national award winning interior designer and what can I say, I love my hectic life.
I always find it funny when I meet someone new and say I am an interior designer, typically the first response is either, “oh, please come help me at my house” OR “oh, you cannot see my house!” Either way, the underlying message to me is the same, “I don’t know where to start!”
Finding that source of inspiration in residential design can be challenging for even the savviest interior designers since decorating a home can be such a personal experience. When decorating our girls bedrooms, I found the best place to start is really. . .anywhere. You may be in love with a really cute bedding set, fun rug or beautiful piece of artwork. Typically the easiest place to start is with a large item, one that would be difficult to match other pieces to but nothing is set in stone here, even your designer diaper bag may inspire you! Once you find this inspiration, start your research project collecting all of your samples and ideas! Make a visit to your local paint store and pull paint swatches that match accent colors from your inspiration item. With patience and perseverance, your project will come to fruition!

Kids afraid of the dark? Parents afraid of color?
May 16, 2010
As an interior designer, I cannot count how many times I have heard adults say, “I am afraid of color!” Maybe almost as many times as I hear my children say they are afraid of the dark!
We just moved into a new house about a month ago and we are starting all over again with decorating but I loved my red, yellow, blue, green, orange, and purple walls in my last home. Sounds like we were living in the circus big top, right? I promise you, it all worked great together! There is no reason to be afraid of paint colors that make a statement. Why? Ready for a trade secret? It’s a big one! You can paint over it if you don’t like it.
Don’t want to select a paint color you will later regret? I can tell you most interior designers and architects do not select the perfect paint color from those tiny swatches they have at the paint store, we get larger paint samples from the manufacturers. If you are not in a position to kidnap your local interior designer, here is another secret. Most paint stores sell paint in smaller sizes: quart, pint even half-pint, you just have to ask what the smallest size is they have available. Find a few paint colors you love and get ready to paint. You don’t need to apply much; a 2-foot by 2-foot section of each color will be perfect. Space them at least a foot apart from the next color so they don’t fight with each other. Over the next couple days, look at the colors in the morning, day and night, in natural daylight and artificial light. The different types of lighting will significantly change the colors. Voila! Within a week you will find the color you feel is a most perfect fit for the room!

The brilliance that is . . .infant car seat covers
May 23, 2010
Last year (before working with Miss Fitz) my husband and I decided to drive from Ohio to Florida to visit some family. We were preparing ourselves for the black hole of the “unknown” which children bring to any long car ride. Like two crazy people, we decided to pack up our 3 sleeping children and leave the house at 1 am. Ever hear the quote, “traveling with the kids is not a vacation, it is a business trip!” Now prior to this trip to Florida, the furthest we had ever driven with the kids was 4 hours. About 4 hours into our 16-hour car ride, the first incident occurred when dinner apparently didn’t sit well with one of the twins. We then rearranged the insides of the car, putting plastic down and moving all important items away from the projectile range of the child. Good thing too, because we found out we had a carsick kid, it was a very long 16 hours.
Oh, how I wish I would have known about toddler car seat covers. I just assumed you were stuck with what the manufacturer provided! Not only do these come in handy when you have a car sick child but as a side note, they are wonderful when you buy a blue infant car seat carrier for a little girl because you don’t like pink and then realize that it really does bother you when everyone looks at your beautiful baby girl and says, “what an adorable little boy!” This sounds so silly as I write it, as I am sure you would think, who would do that, but yes I did! Had I known about infant car seat covers, after a couple of months of being told my first born was a boy, I would have purchased one in a heart beat!
